Backflow Awareness

AWS Irrigation Management Inc. firmly believes in the importance of backflow prevention; and Section 7.6.2.1 of the Ontario Building Code requires it. It states that “connections to potable water systems shall be designed and installed so that non-potable water or substances that may render the water non-potable cannot enter the system.” Backflow preventers are required to be tested yearly by most municipalities, and the manufacturers recommend that they be tested at least annually by a licensed technician.

Documented cases of local commercial incidents include: Stratford 2005, Guelph 1997, and Kitchener 1987. Irrigation-specific cases include accidental introductions of E. coli and, in another case, parasitical nematodes into drinking water from unprotected irrigation systems.
