Comercial: Rainwater Harvesting
The reuse of rainwater is a practice that has been around for centuries and is gaining popularity in every building aspect for water conservation and reduction of water bills. In most cases, rainwater harvesting systems can be simple to construct and are successful solutions to water consumption issues. From residential to commercial properties, AWS Irrigation encourages you to entertain the thought of collecting and reusing the water with a sophisticated approach. Many benefits are achieved, with an invaluable return to our environment.
What is it?
Rainwater harvesting is the action of accumulating and storing water that has fallen on your roof top, decks and other catch basin designs. The reuse of rainwater comes into play when you physically move the stored water for alternate purposes; irrigation, toilet flushing, clothes washing and automobile cleaning.
How Does It Work?
Once AWS has installed your rain water holding system, the rainwater that falls on your roof and deck will travel into storage system via pipes and gutters. This tank can be above or below ground. When the tank has reached a safe capacity, a low energy pumping system will push the water to the desired location; lawn sprinklers, filtration system, etc. This sophisticated design gives you the benefit of watering your landscape during restrictions, reducing your water bills and giving you turf the natural and pure minerals that only rainwater can provide.
Who needs it?
Everyone. The use of collected rainwater will make a significant contribution to the availability of drinking water and reduce the amount of pressure on our aquifers. The world wide availability of freshwater is decreasing as a result of global warming, population growth and wasteful habits. A most of your water consumption comes from summer outdoor use, toilet flushing and other grey water using utilities, every new construction should exercise the real potential of reusing the water delivered free of charge on their roof top.
The concept of burring tanks, rerouting the entire pipe system and using rainwater for multiple purposes may be overwhelming – but know that you can start small. A 65gallon tank with drip line will water you flower beds and potted plants. Something is always better than nothing.
"Research conducted by the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, through the Sustainable Technologies Evaluation Program, showed the RWH systems in commercial and industrial buildings can lower annual water use for toilet flushing and ground irrigation between 59 and 76 per cent. In a study of rainwater harvesting in suburban homes, the University of Guelph reported savings of 60,000 to 70,000 litres of water annually.”
